BAE Systems Chairmans Awards

CHAIRMANS AWARDS A&G have been involved recently in two projects that have both been put forward for a Chairman’s Award .                    The first was focused on Lean and Zero Defects, Supported by the A&G Managing Director Arthur Pinder.         The second was the roll-out of STEM activities into the supply chain.   Supported by the A&G Health and Safety Manager Steve Crew

Mazak i-500 Arrives

New Mazak i-500.     To support a new contract that requires the machining of complex hard metals parts, A&G have added 2 Mazak i-500 machines to their existing Mazak machining cell. These machines provide highly versatile full simultaneous 5-axis vertical machining, that can machine multiple and complex curved surfaces, with high-precision in a single setup.

A&G Receive Coveted SC21Gold Award

      Presented by ADS at this year’s Farnborough air show, A&G the first UK manufacturer to receive the coveted SC21 Gold Award.       Since 2010 A&G have worked closely with the North-West Aerospace Alliance on the “Achieving Supply Chain Excellence Programme” and using the EFQM “five steps learner to world class model” which included external benchmarking and the feedback reports. A&G are now using the National SC 21 ADS Programme “Operational Efficiency O/E Diagnostic” and Continuous Sustainable Improvement Plans to further develop their Manufacturing, Business and Relationship Excellence processes.

A&G Treatment Approvals

Following the acquisition of a treatment facility in June, A&G are proud to announce that we are now both NADCAP and AS9100 Revision D. approved for the below scope of supply. Manufacture and sub-assembly of precision components for Aerospace and General Engineering industries. The processing of metallic components using Chromic Acid Anodising, Chemical Conversion Coating (Alocrom) Immersion and Manual applications. Passivation, Painting, Dry Film Lubricants, Hardness and Conductivity Testing, Magnetic and Penetrant Flaw Detection, Acid Etch and Part Marking.

Apprentice Intake 2018

Apprentice Intake 2018 A&G are again delighted to announce that four apprentices have joined the company in August .   The four successful candidate’s all attended St Aiden’s Secondary School and will spend their first year at Training 2000 Blackburn.       Apprentices with appointment letters

Fleetwood Charity Primary School

  As part of the A&G Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics project, A&G invited 15 children and 2 teachers to spend a morning at A&G The Students were introduced via two exercises to some basic engineering principles. These exercises were separated by a tour of the workshop concluding with a lunch and certificate presentations. In the exercises the Students were asked to make and assemble as many coloured cardboard triangles as possible in a given time, of the correct colour, size and position.

Women’s Business Council

Women's Business Council On the 19thJuly Imran Rasul the Bae Group Procurement Director, attended an event run by the Women's Business Council to celebrate the launch of two supportive toolkits designed particularly for organisations within the Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.   This was to support greater gender diversity and build the talent pipeline by using metrics and through support for small organisations looking to inspire the next generation.   During the event Imran shared his thoughts on why STEM and diversity is so important to BAE as well as sharing the success of what BAE already does to engage with girls at school and the progress we have made to start bridging the gender gap already within BAE.   Anastasia Whittaker (BAE Ambassador) and Steve Crew (SME A&G Ambassador) were also invited to share their experiences of partnering together and engaging with a local primary school to [...]

Work Experience – May 2018

For the fourth consecutive year 8 students from St Aidan's high school came for their week's work experience to A&G. We were particularly pleased to welcome our first female student who could possibly become our first female apprentice. All students were rotated on a daily basis visiting work areas including 3 & 5 axis milling, CNC and 7 axis turning, inspection, and packing and despatch. The students were assessed by their mentors against set criteria and the assessments being fed back to the school. All students said that they had very much enjoyed their week at A&G and appreciated the opportunity to see a precision engineering company in operation.

Apprentice Intake 2018

A&G are delighted to announce that they will continue their policy of training four apprentices each year. All four apprentices attend St Aidan's School Knott End and spent their work experience placement last year at A&G They will begin their apprenticeships at the end of August by spending their first year at the T2000 training centre Blackburn.

A&G invited to be STEM Ambassadors

  A&G have been invited by Bae Systems to provide Ambassadors to support their participation in the national Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) initiative. After training and in partnership with Bae the Ambassadors will provide industry educational support to schools and youth organisations in the local area. This will include such activities as: Delivering short interactive lessons Providing interview experience and CV writing Helping with career planning and advice Hosting company visits Attending career evenings and Fairs.

Supplier Continuous Improvements

A&G are currently completing their SC 21 performance submission for year 3 Silver Award status. Covering the areas of Manufacturing, Business and relationship Excellence and Quality and Delivery performance together with an updated Continuous Sustainable Improvement Plan aimed at achieving SC21 Gold Award by mid-2018

Quality Management Systems

A&G have successfully undergone the transition from Revision C to D. Given A&G implemented process control and a no faults forward policy throughout the business in 2015 & 2016 many of new requirements were already met prior to initiating the change. Ensuring all inputs into a process are risk assessed, and subsequently either eliminated or controlled, has ensured processes throughout the business consistently supply conforming outputs to their internal customer. This has enabled A&G to achieve a 99.998% Right First Time Quality Score with our customers

Technical Engineering

  Appointment to Technical Planning Team Technical Director Mr Wayne Richardson welcomes Mr Chris Davies, saying "Due to the increased volume and complexities of the planning now required on new projects we identified the need to increase and strengthen our technical planning capacity. The experience of Chris will add to the existing team and release resources for other duties"

Waste Transfer Audit

A&G were selected by the Environmental Agency for a Waste Producer Duty of Care audit, under section S34 Environmental Protection Act. This took place in November 2017 and included all aspects of storage, transfer and disposal of hazardous and non hazardous waste. Although the EA do not issue a formal audit report, on conclusion there were no follow up actions required by A&G.

Career Fair

Once again A&G were invited to attend the St Aidan's careers fair. This event is always well attended by year 9, 10 and 11 students, together with their parents and guardians. The A&G stand was very popular as one of the areas premier employers offering students work placements and engineering apprenticeships.

A&G Open Night

Apprentice Recruitment The annual A&G open night took place the 6th December 2017 with over 20 people attending. This event gives potential apprentice and their families the opportunity to meet the A&G staff, tour the manufacturing facilities and learn what an engineering apprenticeship involves.

Apprentices

  Existing Apprentices Mike Pinder the Operations Director commented " The 2nd and 3rd year apprentices are now making a significant contribution to production and their work ethics and quality is now fully justifying the decision to fill any skill requirements via the apprenticeship route"     Rugby Representation We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ryan Hargreaves & Sam Nowatarski on them representing Fleetwood RUFC Senior colts in a tournament that will be played in the Isle of Man over the Easter holidays.    Apprentice Intake 2018 It is anticipated that we again will take on 4 apprentices, bringing the total under training to 12. Applications are now being assessed with interviews taking place in early February.

Work Experience

St Aidan's Students A&G have selected 8 students to visit their facility for one week beginning 21st May, and will form part of their work experience They will gain experience in several different areas, whilst at the same time being assessed by their section leads. Mr Pinder said " The calibre of students that we get from St Aidan's is always very high and I am particularly pleased that this year we will host our first female student.

We are delighted to announce that Dominik Pajda, one of our now third-year apprentices has achieved Distinctions in all five further education topics of: Computer Aided Drafting in Engineering Further Mathematics for Technicians Mechanical Principles in Engineering Business Operations in Engineering Engineering Projects Managing Director Arthur Pinder said "We are delighted with all the apprentices progress, and congratulate Dominik on a set of results that are especially pleasing"

Lean & Tool Pre-Setting

As part of the Lean programme it was identified that it would be cost effective and efficient to introduce tool presetting facility. The tool selected was a Zoller Smile 600 which offered a micron precision tool setting capacity, being carried out completely offline and separate to the machining processes. The presetter is being piloted on the two new Mazak Variaxis i-700 twin pallet machines, before being rolled out across all machines.
